<p>We think the girls in this photograph are sitting on the building materials for the new hall and library. In the background you can just glimpse the tennis courts and a Tremhyfryd chimney pot!

<p>The new hall and library, which had been largely designed by miss Nightingale, was opened officially in 1939.
</p>

<p>This photo, from Gladys Dutton's collection, is marked 'Jonas, French Teacher'. Miss Jones, whose nickname at school was Jonas, is on the right. Both women are wearing panama hats and either a cardigan or a knitted dress.
</p>
<p>It is possible that the beach may have been at Friog where the school had a beach hut. DWS girls went swimming there for many years.
</p>
<p>In the background you can just see a girl in a swimming costume.
</p>

<p>This photograph shows Miss Nightingale in her customary white stockings. The location is unknown but could be near her home, Glandwr Hall.
</p>
<p>Miss Nightingale was a Quaker who did not believe in punishments. During her time new dormitories, a gymnasium, new staffroom and the school hall were added. Click on the Related Item to read a story about Miss Nightingale.

<p>Tom, Alfred, Lawrence and Gladys were all sent to Boarding Schools in the UK from their home in Mexico.Two more brothers were not able to go to boarding school because of WWII.
</p>
<p>Gladys says " My brothers went to Wellington School and they would come up during breaks on their motorcycles. They would pick me up and bring me to our Grandparents or they would just visit. If there was an extra seat on the motorcycle my brothers would pick a girl to go on an outing to the castle. Their arrival would cause quite a stir among the girls."
</p>
<p>Editors Note: I can imagine they would indeed have caused a stir. Amazed that you were allowed out of DWS on a motorbike and taking a friend with you too!
</p>

<p>Ley, as she was known at school died in a tragic car accident on June 10th 1970 towards the end of the summer term. This photo was taken only a couple of weeks earlier. She was looking forward to her time at drama school and her future on the stage. The school choir sang at her funeral mass at the Dolgellau Roman Catholic Church "Our Lady of Sorrows".

<p>An intellectual and visionary Headmistress who was tall, imposing and elegant in colourful Eastern style shawls. She was a member of the 'Friends' and her trust and belief in her pupils derived in large measure from the Quaker belief 'respect for every person, regardless of rank or status and in the essential goodness of everyone' During her tenure, no girl received a punishment for a misdemeanor but was encouraged to look to her conscience.
</p>
<p>Miss Nightingale was a remarkable woman who taught not so much about Latin texts or Old Testament religion but about compassion, the love of beauty surrounding us, about integrity and about the power of silence.
</p>

<p>The first school magazine was published in 1897 as a link between the pupils and the old girls. It was edited by Miss Anstey, (Senior Mistress) with an introduction by Miss Fewings from Australia. This first edition included an article by ex pupil Eluned Morgan Jones, written from Patagonia.
</p>
<p>The cover used the school clours of green and white and was designed by Miss Louie Rigotti, an old girl studying art in Manchester. The original school motto, 'Honour Before Honours' can be seen in the scroll at the top.
</p>

<p>Margaret Griffiths, Jeanette James, Gwyneth Powell, Pamela Thom, Anne Lloyd Davies and Mary Hewitt from Forms V1A and V1B debated at a Mock Election during the Easter Term 1949.
</p>
<p> Margaret holds the 'VOTE LIBERAL' poster - she was related to Clement Davies (former Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire).Pam Thom and Shirley Rushton were candidates too. The Communist party is also represented by Anne and Mary who hold a poster depicting the Hammer and Sickle,with the slogan 'THE DEMOCRACY'. The other two parties appear to represent girls at the school, as opposed to other political parties current at the time.
</p>
<p>The girls are wearing their Sunday Best school uniform for the photograph. The dress wasn't the favourite item of uniform and was generally called a sack!
</p>
